Students grill local candidates on global issues

University of Sheffield students will get the chance to quiz their local parliamentary candidates on issues surrounding healthcare in the UK and abroad and international development during a hustings on Thursday 18 March 2010.

The event is organised by the University of Sheffield Student Stop AIDS Society and the Medsin Society, and will see local candidates asked about topics including climate change, the NHS, the proposed `Robin Hood Tax´ and access to health care for migrants. It will take place at the University´s Medical School at 7pm and is open to the public.

Candidates taking part include Councillor Paul Scriven for the Liberal Democrats, Paul Blomfield for Labour, and Bernard Little on behalf of Councillor Jillian Creasy for the Green Party. All the candidates are standing at the upcoming 2010 General Election in the Sheffield Central constituency.

Vanessa Hearnden, from the Student Stop AIDS Society, said: "The evening will enable us, as a community, to build up relationships with these prospective parliamentary candidates and gain greater insight into their priorities regarding these important issues. It will also prove useful with regard to the upcoming elections in May."

Paul Tobin, President of the University of Sheffield Union of Students who is chairing the debate, said: "Hustings are a vital way for voters to really understand the candidates and the policies they believe in. Events like this show how important specific issues are to people and it's fantastic that these questions have had a forum in which to be debated."

Notes for Editors: The hustings starts at 7pm and will take place at the University of Sheffield´s Medical School, in Lecture Theatre 2. The Medical School is attached to the Hallamshire Hospital on Beech Hill Road.
