Governors celebrate their commitment to the region
Governors from schools across the city gathered at the University of Sheffield this week (5 July 2010) to celebrate their dedication and commitment to local schools in South Yorkshire and the wider region.
The event, which was organised by the Outreach and Access section at the University, aimed to bring together University staff who contribute their skills, expertise and time to being a Governor in local schools and colleges.
The celebration event was attended by Sonia Sharp, the Executive Director of the Children and Young People´s Service in Sheffield Local Authority and Professor Paul White, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Learning and Teaching at the University of Sheffield.
Professor White took the opportunity to thank attendees for their work in local schools. He said: "The University of Sheffield has a longstanding commitment to working with our local schools and colleges, through centrally-managed and department-led outreach activities, SheffieldVolunteering and other community engagement programmes. Many of our staff, from all roles within the University, also contribute to schools and colleges on an individual basis by acting as Governors. This event celebrated their contribution and brought individuals together to share their experiences and best practice for the future."
Sheffield City Council Executive Director of Children and Young People's Services, Sonia Sharp said: "Those who are ready to devote time and effort to acting as school governors always need to be strong advocates for raising attainment amongst children. Today this is one of the main challenges confronting the city, and is why members of staff from the University, who are committed to helping young minds to develop, make such ideal candidates for the role.
"The value of the partnership between the University of Sheffield and Sheffield City Council cannot be overstated. The belief that we share in providing good education to meet individual needs, as well as a clear focus on quality, binds our work closely together.
"I would like to thank all our school Governors from the University, who make a dual contribution to education in Sheffield." Notes for Editors: The University´s Outreach and Access section organises a range of schemes and events throughout the region in order to develop pupils´ interests in going to university as part of its commitment to widen participation in higher education.
