New English Language Teaching Centre opens in Sheffield

The former ambassador to Libya visited the University of Sheffield this week (20 July 2010) to open a new building which will house the English Language Teaching Centre (ELTC).

Sir Vincent Fean, who was also in the city this week to receive an honorary degree from the University, opened the new building which houses more than 30 classrooms, computer lab and listening suites, as well as audio-visual equipment and resources.

The ELTC, a central support service of the University providing a wide range of courses and services to overseas students, has moved into the new building within the Opal 3 student accommodation complex.

The Centre offers a range of courses from academic English preparatory courses to courses for business and international summer schools.

Sir Vincent Fean, the former ambassador to Libya and graduate of the University of Sheffield, received a Doctor of Letters from the University on the same day. Sir Vincent has enjoyed a distinguished career in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, serving as Head of its Counter Terrorism Policy Department and will take up his next appointment - Her Majesty's Consul General to Jerusalem – at the end of 2010.

Richard Simpson, Director of the English Language Teaching Centre, said: "The new Centre has 28 classrooms and four computer laboratories – which are already in use with more than 400 students studying on our current programmes. I am very proud that our University has invested in this facility which will allow us to promote, develop and support our international students. It is very fitting that our students should start their university journey in a first-class facility."
