Information for current postgraduate students

Welcome to the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. The information contained here is intended to supplement that on the MiniCD which is offered to all postgraduate research students. If you have not received a MiniCD, it is available from the School's IT Team and can also be viewed online.

If you have recently joined the School, there are a number of tasks that you must complete and ongoing requirements that you should know about. Prior to commencing laboratory work, there are health and safety matters that you must deal with and you must also be aware of certain administrative procedures in the School.

The School Graduate Research Committee (GRC) is responsible for monitoring the progress and supervision of all full and part-time MPhil, PhD and MD students. Candidates are required to undertake two School RTP units, to submit regular progress reports and to present their results annually. The School GRC also oversees the transfer of registration from MPhil to PhD or MD.

All students are strongly encouraged to make use of the Personal and Professional Development Planning (PPDP) tool designed for research students. This on-line tool is available through MUSE. It will assist you in keeping track of your professional development and provide you with a platform to reflect on the skills that you are acquiring or enhancing through your research experience. It can also be utilised as appropriate for Training Needs Analysis, Skills Auditing and Career Planning.

Annual Leave for Postgraduate Research Students

Students are able to take around six weeks annual leave per year. This is in line with other UK academic institutions and in line with UoS annual leave allowance for academic staff. Leave should be planned in advance and agreed with the supervisor. Leave forms must be submitted to the postgraduate secretary, countersigned by the supervisor. These will be monitored.
