Requirements at a glance (PART TIME MPhil, MD, PhD students)

University Staff Candidates

University staff candidates will be classed as full time students with regards to compulsory DDP Modules and MPhil to PhD/MD transfers, and will therefore work to full time deadlines. Please see the ‘requirements at a glance’ for Full Time Students for information. There is a level of flexibility however, on deadlines for such candidates, so if you wish to discuss this, please contact the PGR Administrators.

Training Needs Analysis (with supervisors and personal tutor)

Month 1 of Years 1, 2 and 3.

Supervisor and Personal Tutor Reports

Supervisor and Personal Tutor Reports should be submitted from the first available date after commencement of study until submission of the thesis, on the dates given below:

These are sent to the supervisor for completion and return annually every July.


Year 1

Completion of compulsory training modules

Part Time/Staff candidates are encouraged to complete the training modules (MED6950 and MED6960).

As you are a Part Time/Staff candidate you will be eligible for an extension to these deadlines where appropriate for the Medical School modules. Please contact either Jodie Burnham or Carol Fidler.

FCM6100 Research Ethics & Integrity

An introductory lecture will be held twice a year (October & March). Following this students will attend 7 face to face sessions throughout the year. For part-time students there is an option to complete the sessions online. Please contact mdhgradauteschool@sheffield.ac.uk if you would like to complete the module online. Rough timings are shown below:

This module will start in October each year. Cross-sessional students will start the module the following October.

MED6950 - Literature Review

A tutorial about the Literature Review is held four times a year. All students are required to attend the first available tutorial after their start date. Tutorial dates and deadlines for submission of the literature review are shown below.

MD STUDENTS - Part Time MPhil leading to MD students are required to upgrade within their 1st year of registration, therefore please follow the requirements at a glance for full time students.

Year 1

1st Year Oral Presentation

The 1st year oral presentation forms part of MED6960, but this is compulsory for all students regardless.


Year 2

2nd Year Poster Presentation

All 2nd year students are required to present a poster. This year it is being incorporated within the School’s Research Meeting which will be held on the 11th & 12th June 2012.

At the end of year 2 (year 4 for part time students), PhD students are, in addition, required to produce a one page outline of their proposed PhD thesis.


Year 3

3rd Year Oral Presentation

All 3rd year students are required to give an oral presentation. This will be held on Monday 2nd July in Lecture Theatres 1&2, Medical Education Centre, Northern General Hospital.
