Monitoring

Throughout your PGR degree you are required to meet regularly with your supervisors and twice yearly with your Personal Tutor. You will have received an email from one of the PGR Programme Administrators when you started informing you of the name of your Personal Tutor. For copies of the Supervisor and Personal Tutor report forms please visit the forms webpage. The ‘requirements at a glance’ WebPages provide information on when these reports are due.

1st Year Presentation Day

As part of your training you are required to regularly present your work. In April and May the School holds two Presentation Days and you will be required to give an oral presentation of your work at one of these meetings.

Attendance at the School’s Research Meeting

It is mandatory that as a first year student you attend the School's Research Meeting. A register will be taken at various points throughout the day. At the end of the meeting you will be provided with a certificate of attendance. This certificate must then be given to the PGR Programme Administrators as proof of attendance as it is one of the requirements to pass MED6960.

Transfer from MPhil to PhD/MD

At the end of year 1 you are required to participate in the process to transfer registration from MPhil to PhD/MD. This process will commence approximately 9 months after beginning registration when you are required to submit your mini-thesis title. For further details visit our transfer from MPhil pages.

Year 2

Monitoring

In your second year you are still required to complete the School's regular supervisor and personal tutor reports.  For information on the dates that these are due seethe 'requirements at a glance' pages.

Poster Presentation

In your second year you are required to give a poster presentation of your work.  The poster presentation day will be incorporated into this year's School's Research Meeting.  An academic member of staff will visit your poster.  You will have 5 minutes to present your work.  Feedback forms on poster presentations can be collected outside Firth Hall at 16:00.

Please note that any student unable to attend will present at a later date.

2nd Year Thesis Plan

All full time postgraduate research students will be required to complete a 'Thesis Plan' form at the end of their second year.  Staff candidates who are expected to complete their research in a fixed period of 3 years will be expected to submit the form at the end of their second year.  Part-time candidates should submit the form at the end of Year 4.  Students will be contacted by the PGR Administrators when the plan is due to be submitted, and will be due within a month of being requested.

This form has been introduced to encourage students to consider how they are progressing towards completion, and prepare an outline plan for their thesis.  A copy of the form, which was launched at the Information and Networking session held recently for 2nd Year students, is available to download from the right hand links.

Year 3

Monitoring

In your third year you are still required to complete the School's regular supervisor and personal tutor reports. For information on the dates that these are due see the 'requirements at a glance' pages.

3rd Year Presentation Day

In your final year of study you are required to give a 15 minute oral presentation.

All presentations will be judged by an academic panel and prizes will be awarded to the students judged to have the best oral presentations.  The panel will assess student performance in terms of presentation, analysis of results, perception and understanding of the project and its direction and handling of questions. The programme for the presentation day will be circulated in advance to everyone in the School, all of whom are invited to attend.

Year 4

Monitoring

In your writing up year you are still required to complete monitoring forms and keep in regular contact with your Supervisor(s) and your personal tutor.  The supervision monitoring form is slightly different and requires you to keep us informed of the percentage of your thesis that has been completed and the date that you plan to submit.  Please note you are expected to write-up within 3-years of your start date.
