The University of Sheffield
The Medical School

What sort of career prospects are available on qualification?

Medicine necessitates life-long learning. The undergraduate course lasts only five years (six if you intercalate a Bachelor of Medical Science degree). After graduation you become a Junior Hospital Doctor and undertake an integrated planned two-year foundation programme of general training. The first year of this equates to the current pre-registration year leading to full registration with the General Medical Council. The second year is post-registration and builds on the first year by providing further training to allow you to develop core or generic skills essential for all doctors. Following the foundation programme a considerable number of pathways are open to you in various specialities and these are indicated in the diagram below. Even this list is not exhaustive and some members of the Medical Profession have even entered Politics and risen to high office in Government.
