Recent reviews by the UK government and industrial bodies have identified the serious impact of an increasing shortage of personnel, with Doctorate level training in metallic materials, on the global competitiveness of the UK's manufacturing and defence capability. Furthermore, future applications of materials are increasingly being seen as systems that incorporate several material classes and engineered surfaces into single components, to increase performance.
In partnership, the Universities of Sheffield and Manchester offer a fresh and energised invigoration of metallic materials research training. Our multidisciplinary, systems approach will not only produce doctoral graduates with the leadership potential that industry urgently seeks, but also the new and exciting science, engineering and innovation critical to the UK in maintaining a competitive manufacturing base.
