Intercultural Awareness with a Language

Learners can choose Beginners’ Italian, Beginners’ Spanish or Post GCSE French.
The majority of this module will be delivered online. Students will be required to complete a weekly set of language tasks and attend 4 evening classes. There will also be delivery online of a series of seminars and tasks raising intercultural awareness, including the development of the attitudes and skills underpinning the intercultural competence necessary to operate successfully in a different culture.
Aims & Outcomes Language (Italian & Spanish)
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
- Understand and respond orally to general everyday situations.
- Understand and use simple grammar structures.
- Read simple texts and obtain factual information.
- Give information on topics such as your family, where you live, what you are studying.
- Appreciate major differences between the English and the Italian/Spanish way of life.
Aims & Outcomes Language (French)
This course will provide a springboard for revising and refreshing GCSE French language skills. By the end of the course, students should be able to:
- Understand and discuss a range of topics.
- Understand and use a range of tenses.
- Give information on topics such as studies, free-time activities and work.
- Appreciate major differences between the English and French way of life.
Aims & Outcomes: Intercultural Awareness
This unit aims to raise and develop intercultural awareness in order to equip students with skills
to help them operate more effectively in a multi-cultural/international environment, including
university and the workplace, whether in the UK or another country.
By the end of the course, students should be able to give evidence of the development of attitudes,
skills and knowledge associated with Intercultural Awareness.
Assessment
The assessment for this module is 50% for the language element and 50% for the intercultural awareness element.
