Enrolment
MLTC General Language modules are open to all: undergraduate and postgraduate students of the University of Sheffield, members of staff of the University, and members of the public above 16 years of age. Entry restrictions may apply for other MLTC modules (e.g. Tandem, Project, Year Abroad modules, etc.). Please check restrictions on the language-specific page in the left-hand side 'Courses' sub-menu and contact the relevant Language Co-ordinator (See 'Staff') if unsure.
Enrolment events are held prior to the start of each semester (See 'Courses' for semester dates). In the Autumn, enrolment can be done for one semester only, or for both semesters. When and how you can enrol depends on who you are and, for students, on whether you wish to take the course for credits or not. Undergraduate students registering for credits
As a student, your home department may allow you to take one or several module(s) outside the department using 'unrestricted credits' as part of your degree programme. You can use these 'unrestricted credits' to study a language with the MLTC: all our modules are worth 10 credits per semester and can be taken at level 1, 2, 3 or 4.
(If you do not have any unrestricted credits or wish to take an MLTC course outside your degree, please see the 'Students not registering for credits' procedure.)
First-year undergraduate students:
An enrolment event is held each semester before classes starts:
Autumn semester:
- Date: Tuesday 24 September and Wednesday 25 September 2013
- Venue: Octagon Centre (Number 118 on the campus map)Spring semester:
Date and venue to be confirmed.
A language tutor will be there to assess which level is most appropriate for you and to identify a group compatible with your timetable. You should bring your student card with you and, if known, your timetable.
If you miss this event or wish to change your choice of unrestricted module(s) after that date, please follow the 'Add/Drop' procedure below before the end of Week 3.
All other students:
Please follow the 'Online Module Choice' procedure or the 'Online Registration for Continuing Students'. Prior to validating your choice of an MLTC module, the Co-ordinator for the language that you wish to study may need to interview you in order to assess which level is most appropriate for you. Once you are enrolled, the MLTC Support Office will contact you before the beginning of the semester and ask you to choose a group compatible with your timetable.
If you wish to change your choice of unrestricted module(s), please follow the 'Add/Drop' procedure below.
Add/Drop procedure:
Students wishing to add or drop a module previously chosen as part of registration processes can do so during the first three weeks of each semester by completing the 'Add/Drop procedure'. However, do not leave this procedure for the last minute:
- Places on MLTC courses are limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Prior to validating your add/drop choice, the Co-ordinator for the language that you wish to study will need to interview you in order a) to assess which level is most appropriate for you, and b) to identify a group compatible with your timetable.
Postgraduate research students
Postgraduate research student may study or continue studying a language with the MLTC without any charges as part of the Doctoral Development Programme (DDP) or the Research Training Programme (RTP) provided their supervisor agrees that studying the language is important for their doctoral development.
In order to enrol on an MLTC course as part of the DDP or RTP, you should:
- seek the authorization of your supervisor;
- contact the relevant MLTC Language Co-ordinator to arrange for an interview (See 'Staff' in the left-hand side menu);
- once you have been accepted on an MLTC course, request from your supervisor that they email their authorization to the relevant Language Co-ordinator.
The above procedure can be completed from four weeks before the start of classes until the end of the third week of teaching each semester. However, please be aware that places on MLTC courses may be very limited once the enrolment events below have taken place. We would also strongly advise against missing the first weeks of a course at beginners' level.
If you are a postgraduate students on a taught degree programme or have not been authorized by your supervisor to take an MLTC module as part of the DDP/RTP, you can still join our courses for a fee. In order to enrol, please follow the procedure for 'Students not registering for credits' below.

Please note:
- Summative assessment takes place in part or in whole outside normal class-time during the University examination period (link) and may be scheduled by the University Examination Office at any time and on any day, including Saturdays, during that period. The exact date of individual exams is usually published one month before the start of the examination period. Examinations cannot be re-scheduled.
- Re-sit examinations are not available for non-credited students. However, non-credited students who fail the summartive assessment are still entitled to an MLTC Certificate of Attendance provided they completed the formative assessment and attended at least 80% of classes.
- The ‘Discounted Fee’ includes in-class formative assessment only, not summative assessment. Learners wishing to enrol on the ‘Discounted Fee’ option will receive feedback for the formative assessment that they submit. Provided that they also attend at least 80% of classes, students will be able to add the module to their HEAR and all publics will be entitled to receiving upon request an MLTC certificate of attendance stating the learning outcome level of their course.
- 2 semester course enrolment: This fee is only available when enrolling in the Autumn for two semesters. Learners who enrolled for one semester only in the Autumn and wish to continue the course in the Spring semester will need to pay the ‘one semester course’ fee when enrolling in the Spring.
- Cancellation and Refund policy:
- Learners wishing to cancel their enrolment on an MLTC course can do so at any time until the end of the third week of teaching by emailing their request to the MLTC Office (mltc@sheffield.ac.uk). After this period, refunds are only available in exceptional circumstances, and upon receipt of documentary evidence (e.g. a serious medical condition).
- Please note that all refunds will incur an administrative charge of £50.00.
- Unless they are cancelled within the first three weeks of teaching, all enrolments are definitive and cannot be modified, e.g. A ‘Standard Fee’ enrolment cannot be changed to a ‘Discounted Fee’ enrolment, or the other way around; a ‘2 semester course' enrolment cannot be changed to a ‘1 semester course’ enrolment, or the other way around.
