Work Placements
Duties
Placements offered by the Modern Languages Teaching Centre normally involve the following kinds of work:
- clerical and administrative duties (including photocopying)
- reception work
- cataloguing and filing
- preparation of teaching and learning materials
- invigilation of tests
- project assistance
- native speaker assistance in the classroom
- translation
- conversation classes with students and staff
You will not be expected to exercise sole responsibility for the teaching of classes, for intensive class preparation or for the marking of written work
The Modern Languages Teaching Centre has 7 full-time and 3 part-time members of teaching staff, plus 2 support staff. You may be asked to assist any of them, at the discretion of the Director of the Modern Languages Teaching Centre (Jane Woodin)
Hours/Length of Placement
The precise number of hours you will be expected to work will vary according to the nature of your placement, but you should expect to spend not less than 25 hours and not more than 40 hours per week in the MLT Centre. (The normal working hours for placement students are 10-5).
We are sorry but we can not accept placement students in July and August.
Training/Office Space
The MLT Centre will normally provide training for any specialised task you are asked to undertake. You may also have the use of a networked computer.
Payment
We regret that payment is available only under exceptional circumstances.
Accommodation
Finding accommodation as a placement student is not very easy. You can check the following website: www.sheffieldforum.co.uk for accommodation offered by single private persons or families.
If you find something of interest, please contact us before making any decision as there are some places we would not recommend.
Usually prices vary between £50 and £70 per week including bills for water, electricity and heating. Nice areas to live in and which are also near to the university are Crookes, Broomhill, Walkley and Crookesmoor.
Candidates
Successful candidates for a work placement in the Modern Languages Teaching Centre should have:
- a university level education
- a good working knowledge of three EU languages
- an interest in language learning and teaching
- good IT skills, including the ability to use the Internet
- good interpersonal, teamworking, organisational and communication skills
- a sense of responsibility and a capacity for initiative

If you wish to be considered for a placement, please send a formal letter of application together with a curriculum vitae (with photograph). Please state in your letter the dates between which you are available and give an outline of the kind of assistance you think you can provide. Your curriculum vitae should contain full details of your education and training, any employment history, and two professional references. Please also indicate if there is any aspect of your health that is of relevance to your application for a placement.
