MA in Ethnomusicology

The MA in Ethnomusicology can be read full-time (MUST25) or part-time (MUST26).

Ethnomusicologists seek to understand the whole human process within which music is imagined, discussed and made, relating specific musical sounds, behaviours and ideas to their broader social, cultural and political contexts. Studying individuals and societies all around the world, including the West, we aim to discover and document human musical life in its full richness and diversity. Sheffield's MA programme offers a thorough and distinctive training in ethnomusicology, paying attention to both theory and practice. We take particular note of the fact that many applicants are interested in studying their own musical traditions, and have designed a course structure and academic environment that facilitates this, while providing a grounding in the broader literature and methods of the discipline. A final dissertation completes the degree.
