Applying to Study Music at Sheffield

At Sheffield the exceptionally varied interests of the staff enable us to offer a very broad undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum, within which students are encouraged to develop their special talents and enthusiasms. While the Department is strong in the traditional areas of musical study - the history, theory and aesthetics of Western music from the middle ages to the present day - it is the way these mingle with newer disciplines (among them music psychology and ethnomusicology) that gives Sheffield a unique and exciting position among British music departments.

Out of 50 places, roughly 38 are allocated to BMus single-honours Music applicants with the remaining 12 places being spread over 11 dual (BA) degrees.

We strongly encourage applications from well-qualified students expecting to obtain a good ABRSM Grade VIII result on their principal instrument and three good A2 passes or equivalent. Applications from mature students are welcomed.

Interview

Given the diverse range of qualifications taken by prospective applicants and a growing number of mature applications we continue to interview as many people as we can. The interview gives the applicant a chance to play their instrument, discuss their application with a member of staff and ask questions that were not necessarily answered through brochures, web sites or open days. Interviews provide an opportunity to go well beyond the details of the UCAS application form in a relaxed, informal environment.  Please see our interview timetable and do not hesitate to contact Jo Burrows or Adrian Moore to request an interview.
