In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, the Department received an average ranking of 3.250. The vast majority of our research (80%) was classified as 'world-leading' (45%) or 'internationally excellent' (35%).

Diverse research profile

With fifteen permanent members of academic staff, a varying number of fellows and assistants according to research projects, and well over 100 graduate students, the Department of Music has a strong and diverse research profile.

Research areas

Research in the Department is organised into six main areas, each of which acts as a focus for staff and students working in that broad field where they can share experience and discuss new ideas and approaches. For collaborative research across disciplines, cohesion is offered by the Centre for Applied and Interdisciplinary Research in Music (CAIRM).

Seminar series

The Department hosts a prominent research seminar series. Speakers include staff and visiting researchers from Britain and overseas. This is a chance to hear the latest research from some of the leading scholars of music.
