Postgraduate composition
Composition at postgraduate level enables students to further define their creative voice in both instrumental and computer music areas.
For studio-based composers, the MA in Sonic Arts is an opportunity to work intensively in a cutting-edge area with the support of a team of composers and expert programmers. The Sheffield MMus is particularly attractive to composers who wish to complete a portfolio of compositions while focusing on a particular topic, composer or work, or on a specific area of professional development. The composition portfolio forms 50% of the submission with a further 50% often coming from a performance (where appropriate), thesis or 'folio'. The folio very popular with many composers using it to support their creative work.
The folio may comprise
- Contemporary Music analysis (looking at work of composers that have perhaps inspired you)
- Detailed contextualisation of your work
- Projects in puredata or sound diffusion performances
- Applied work in the Composition Collaboratory
- Open Source programming
- Topics in ethnomusicology, musicology, music education, music and gender, popular music, the psychology of music and world music.

Postgraduate studies research degrees
The MPhil and PhD are the highest levels of achievement and take up to 3 years. You are asked to take a number of research training programmes so as to be fully aware of how your practice as research falls within the boundaries of a broader research infrastructure. Many successful PhD candidates go on to work in academia either as post-doctoral researchers or lecturers.
