Music Mind Machine in Sheffield

MMM icon

Music Mind Machine has moved to the University of Sheffield after a successful 12 years of residence at the Radboud University in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. Peter Desain is now heading Brain Computer Interfacing research in Nijmegen, while Henkjan Honing has founded the Music Cognition Group at the University of Amsterdam.

Music Mind Machine is one of a growing number of applied and interdisciplinary music research projects at Sheffield and is directed by Renee Timmers. It was established in 2009 to promote interdisciplinary research of music cognition, focussing on emotion and (embodied) meaning in music, expressive performance of music, and music perception. The interdisciplinary approach combines expertise in music, psychology and computer science: investigations use quantitative and experimental methodologies, which is combined with the aim to develop technological applications that assist performers and listeners in their musical activities.

Current collaborations

Facilities include physiological measurement, MIDI drum and Disklavier, Reaction-Time measurement, performance analysis, and an automatic performance feedback system.

If you are interesting in writing a dissertation related to one of the research areas or visit to do postdoctoral research, please contact Renee Timmers.
