Current research
I am currently working on a large-scale ESRC grant that examines fundamental and applied questions concerning emotion regulation I am working with Dr. Tom Farrow on the neuroimaging arm of the study, which will investigate:
- The neurophysiological substrates of ‘self’ and ‘other’ emotion regulation
- Differences between automatic and conscious emotion regulation.
We will be using fMRI and skin conductance measures to investigate these research questions. The results will contribute to the wider research network.
- The neurophysiological substrates of emotion regulation (and the interaction between neural and autonomic components).
- Differences between automatic and conscious emotion regulation.
Broader research interests
- Social and cognitive neuroscience
- The neurophysiological basis of social cognition, theory of mind, empathy, emotion processing, emotion regulation (primarily using fMRI)
- Using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to modulate brain function and cognitive function
- I am interested in studying these processes in health, as well as in psychiatric disorders.
Research Supervision
I am co-supervisor for:
- Isabelle Van Heeswijk (B.Med.Sci.; ongoing).
I have provided additional co-supervision for 6 phase 1b medical students.
Memberships
- Organization for Human Brain Mapping
- Society for Social Neuroscience
Teaching
- Neuroimaging to postgraduate psychiatry trainees (for MRCPsych exam).
Selected publications
- An amygdala response to fearful faces with covered eyes
