Travel:

Travelling from Manchester airport to Sheffield:
1. By Coach/Bus: There is a dedicated coach stop within the bus station serving Terminals 1 and 2. National Express bus (route number NX350) the first coach departs for Sheffield at 8.05am and they run throughout the day. The fare is about £7.90 and the journey takes 23 hours.
2. By Rail: A covered travelator links the rail station direct to all terminals. Trains to Sheffield depart every hour during the day time – the fare is £18.80 and the journey time is approximately 1 hour. Trains are safe and comfortable.
3. Please note that travelling before 9.30am can be more expensive. For information on train times please refer to www.nationalrail.co.uk

Travelling to the University from the bus or train stations:
When you first arrive in Sheffield we recommend you take a taxi rather than the bus or a tram. A taxi costs approximately £7£9. Taking buses or the tram will mean you will have to walk some distance carrying all your luggage. There is a taxi rank just outside the railway station. which is also very close to the bus station,
taxi drivers are familiar with most university buildings.

Trams run from behind the railway station. You will need to get off the tram at the ‘University of Sheffield’ stop for central campus, you will have to walk at least 200 metres from there to the Students’ Union Building.

From the University to your accommodation:
The best means of travelling from the University to your accommodation with vary depending on
where you are staying. If you have suitcases with you then the easiest form of transport will be to
get a taxi. You can either book a taxi by calling 0114 239 3939 or by stopping a black cab by
sticking your arm out (it will only be available if the light on the top of it is litup).
If you visit the Information Desk in the Students’ Union Building between 9:30am and 4:30pm during Discovery
Week then one of our student assistants will be able to call and order a taxi for you.
Sheffield has good bus and tram networks, so as you get used to the city you will probably find it
easier and cheaper to walk or make use of these.

The Programme:

The Discovery Week programme has been designed to be as flexible as possible, allowing you to pick and choose to attend the events you’re most interested in. A large number of events are free to attend, but you will need to purchase food and or drinks at some events. We hope the programme that we’ve designed is a good mix of information sessions and opportunities to socialise and meet new people. Visit www.sheffield.ac.uk/newstudents/discovery/events for the full programme.

Keeping up to date:

Information Desk and notices: Make sure you regularly check the messages we’ll be leaving on the board behind the Information Desk in the Students’ Union Building for updates on events, people to meet up with and important information.
Facebook: If you haven’t already liked the ‘Sheffield Global Campus’ Facebook page then make sure you do as we’ll be using it for updates and communications during the week www.facebook.com/sheffieldglobalcampus
Twitter: Follow us @SheffGlobal on Twitter and use #shefintro13 to keep up to date.

Welcome Briefings:

There will be a Welcome Briefing each day during Discovery Week. We strongly encourage you to come to one of these when you first arrive so that you can find out more about what is on offer during the week, meet key members of staff, sign up for events and of course meet other new students. There will be lots of staff and assistants available to answer any questions you might have.

Events with limited places:

Some of the events during Discovery Week have a limited number of places and tickets will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Tickets to these events can only be booked on the day the event is happening. You can book tickets at the morning Welcome Briefing or at the Information Desk in the Students’ Union they will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Using your free time:

The Discovery Week programme has been designed to be as flexible as possible, giving you the opportunity to organise your own time during the week. As well as taking part in the activities we have planned we’d also encourage you to make some time to explore the University, Sheffield and the local area there’s lots to do and see! We’ve produced a number of information sheets with ideas for activities and trips you might like to do during the week. Information sheets will be available from the Welcome Briefings and the Information Desk in the Students’ Union.

Preregistration:

You will all have received a Welcome/Registration Pack from the University with details of what you need to complete for preregistration included in ‘The Essential Guide to Registration’. You will find the registration process during Intro Week easier and quicker if you have taken the time to complete as many preregistration
steps as possible. http://www.shef.ac.uk/newstudents/registration/before

Internet:

Wireless and wired internet is available through your University login. All students are provided with a University of Sheffield computer account and a university email address. Activating your computer account via the preregistration process before coming to Sheffield will enable you to access the internet along with your University email account and other online resources as soon as you arrive on campus.

Luggage storage and collection times:

If you have arranged your own accommodation but need somewhere to leave your luggage before you move in, there will be a room available on Campus each day. To leave your luggage in this room please go to Information Desk just inside the entrance of the Students’ Union Building where one of our student assistants will help you. Luggage can be left in these rooms from 9:30am until 4:00pm each day.

Police Registration:

If your visa requires you to register with the Police you must do so within 7 days of arriving in the UK. Instructions on how to do this are available from the Welcome Briefings and the Information Desk in the Students’ Union. Please take the necessary paperwork, photos and money with you and ask at the Information Desk if you have any questions.

Passport scanning: Non EU Students Only

Once you have arrived in the UK and had passport stamped you will need to either upload a picture/scan of your personal details page and visa page onto the preregistration website OR attend a passport scanning session, details of which are in your Essential Guide to Registration. It will speed up the registration process in Intro Week if you are able to scan your passport as part of your preregistration http://www.shef.ac.uk/newstudents/registration/before
