Obtaining Prior Entry Clearance / Leave to Enter Abroad

1. Contact the Entry Clearance Officer at the British Embassy, Consul or High Commission at least one month, but not more than three months, before travelling to Britain to apply for entry clearance. (If you need ATAS, see the following link and you must apply in good time).

2. There is a charge for processing applications. Application forms and information are free in all British Embassies, Consuls and High Commissions.

3. In some countries On-line aplications are possible.

4. Interviews are usually required for pre-departure entry clearance where on-line applications are not possible.

  1. There may be a long waiting list for interview appointments.
  2. Book the appointment even before examination results are known.
  3. Take all original documents and any certified translations to the interview.

5. Postgraduate Students must complete this application procedure as soon as possible if they wish to obtain University-owned accommodation. See:
