1. I´ve been abroad before – I don´t need help
But you haven´t been to Sheffield before, have you? And research shows that previous experience of cross-cultural living does not necessarily prevent culture shock or problems in adapting.
2. I´m too busy!
The time spent on orientation will save you time. You will be better prepared for your studies, will know your way around before you have to find it, you will have made friends and contacts to help you through the first week of semester, have found time to open a bank account etc.
3. I need the extra time with my family
There´s no doubt that you will miss your family and friends, whether you come on orientation or not. But students in previous years have found that the programme offers a unique opportunity to mix with other students in a similar situation and that this provides support when inevitable homesickness strikes.
4. I can´t afford the extra costs
Can you afford not to be prepared?
