The University of Sheffield
So... What's It Really Like?

Studying And Living In Sheffield

Marika Panayiotou, Cyprus

Studying and living in Sheffield is an experience that cannot be easily matched. Our student years are by far the most educational, fun and energetic years of our lives, which will forever be cherished.

For this reason it is vital that we make the right choice when applying to a University. Not only do we look for a University with a strong academic reputation, but also one with a high-quality support team, a safe environment, beautiful surroundings and an excellent Students´ Union that offers representation and activities.

The University of Sheffield is characterised by all the above and so much more.

Starting student life is admittedly a big leap in our lives. For International Students though it is so much more challenging. Moving abroad means adjusting to a different lifestyle. An International Student may experience culture shock and homesickness to a varied level. The reasoning for this may be anything from the food, the weather, British mentality, the different British accents, the educational system (as in the way the course is taught) and even the different library system!
One thing is certain though: The University takes measures to ensure your smooth transition into the Sheffield environment.

When I first came to Sheffield, being a vulnerable student, it was easy for me to start judging the differences. However Sheffield embraced me and opened my eyes to the true fact that there is no `wrong´ or `right´; only different. Each culture has a different way of being and that is a beautiful thing, otherwise we would all be the same and this world would be a very boring place.

Sheffield gave me the chance to study, socialise and work with such a diverse group of people who enriched my life. Now I love this city as my own. The University offered me academic and moral support if I had ever had a problem. I had never felt ignored; the fact that the staff seem genuinely happy and willing to help.
I feel so lucky for the opportunities that were offered to me.

I had the chance to work in the International Students Orientation week, helping new students adapt in Sheffield. This gave me a true sense of community, especially when those students later branded their experience as the `best week of the year´! Also the Union is known to organise the best international events in the U.K; Sheffield gave me the chance to be apart of that as a member of the International Students´ Committee (ISC) and later as an International Students´ Officer.

Yes it is difficult moving to a different country but it only becomes easier and better (actually amazing). My advice is to come with an open mind and heart and dare to experience the diversity of our multicultural society. You will not regret it. I now have really good British friends and friends from almost every country of the world!

Graduating from the University, I am `rich´ for I will take with me a prestigious Law Degree and an enriched student experience that only the University of Sheffield could have offered me.
Thank you Sheffield!
