The University of Sheffield
So... What's It Really Like?

First Visit To The UK

Sanjaya Rao Kannath, India

This has been my first visit to the UK. Having known the UK through media (television, newspapers, magazines etc) had instilled in me the UK as a vintage country with conservative lifestyle. Flying above Manchester and glimpsing the city line, stepping into this city and seeing its modern outlook was fascinating. The UK is truly modern in its living and yet has traditional blend in the air. Having been more vegetarian in my food habits, getting adjusted to the food of the UK has not been a problem, as there are vegetarian foods available in every known eating place, shops and also authentic Indian restaurants in Sheffield.

The people of Sheffield have been very helpful. It is normal for international students to lose their way, and it is the folks of this city, both young and old, who guide them. Morning walkers and joggers adjusted their time in showing me the way. The Students' Union has various forums for international students, and this has been very helpful for students of India and other Asian communities in particular.

Education is different from what we have in India. We have regular interaction with our tutors, study groups. It is always a push for us to go the extra mile in our studies, getting knowledge from various sources and performing. Every student in their study group has to help one another, and see to it that the other student is also at par. This has helped in better interaction, human relationships and networking.

The MBA at Sheffield is truly global in perspective. My advice for those seeking admission in Sheffield is this: Sheffield is truly cosmopolitan in its culture, is truly competitive in nature. The excellence that has been part of the education system here and the competitive edge one will get is the right balance that will help in one's pursuit of a global career.
