Choosing The University Of Sheffield
Ahlam Al-Zahrani
My name is Ahlam Al-Zahrani, from Saudi Arabia. I have a scholarship from my government. I completed my master degree in Nursing Research at King´s College London on 2006. After completing my master degree at King´s college London it seemed a natural progression to continue my PhD study at the same or a more prestigious university. I chose to study at the University of Sheffield because it has an excellent academic repetition, is located in a nice and small city which is reasonable for living particularly for a family, and most importantly because it provides a wide range of subjects and courses.
I had a few fears regarding my decision to move from one city to another, especially with my responsibilities to my children. However, when I made enquires to the department of Nursing and Midwifery I found the staff to be friendly and helpful throughout the enrolment process. My research supervisors are always approachable, friendly and understanding to my circumstances and needs. I have not been disappointed.
One year into my studies my command of communications has undeniably improved, as indeed has my knowledge of my research topic "sexual health". The study administration has given me an excellent boost to my confidence and I have become the student representative. The flexibility of choosing the Research training program allows me to tailor it around my personal and professional needs, which in turn will benefit my future career. It also has allowed me to meet lots of people from different backgrounds which open my eyes to new things that I would never have known about previously.
