Two Cities - Two Characters (So Different England)

Dina Timartseva, Russia

One of the marvellous things of my being in England is the discovery that this country can be so full of any variety. Living in two cities such as London and Sheffield is a great opportunity to experience diversity of life styles, people and, of course, the weather. They can be at once alike and yet be so unpredictably different from each other.

Firstly, wherever you go you will be surprised at how the language varies within the country. Once heard you will certainly recognize a Yorkshire accent. Moreover, in conversation with the locals you will get to know some jokes about posh London language. This is a really amazing phenomenon of the number of dialects and accents used in England.

Another aspect forming the character of the city is the people living there. The stereotype of cold and unfriendly people is more suitable for those who live in a capital. London is swamped with hordes of tourists and it is fairly easy to feel tired and overwhelmed with impressions for a moment. Moreover you can be very lonely in this huge and noisy place. However, London offers an exciting and vibrant social life for visitors. Unfortunately, after a day full of sightseeing and visiting galleries and museums you can hardly think of any evening entertainment, let alone people desperately trying to find a space in the overcrowded underground in the rush hour.

The most disappointing thing about London is that it can take ages to get to the city centre. The Tube is the fastest option, but quite expensive. Another alternative, using a double-decker bus, is time-consuming although it has some advantages for travellers – you can see the entire city.

On the contrary, Sheffield is a very convenient and accessible place for residents and tourists. A high percentage of the population of Sheffield are students as this is an ideal place for studying. There are large varieties of study facilities and entertainment, encouraging and helping students from all over the world. All necessary things such as shops, banks, post offices are concentrated in the city centre and near Universities and that saves a considerable amount of time.

Students can also easily combine study and an active social life with relaxing walks in the most beautiful countryside in Britain – the Peak District, enjoying exciting views from the hills. It is a paradise for those who like sport and different kinds of active rest.

Despite all the advantages of London as one of the most world famous and beautiful centres of tourism and culture, you can only feel the real British way of living by coming to Sheffield. At first sight Sheffield may seem quiet and conservative, but in reality it is far from true. You will be immersed in a special peaceful atmosphere and be fascinated by the magical ringing of the Cathedral bells.
