Bringing Your Computer to the University
The University of Sheffield provides excellent facilities for students bringing their own computer to
university.
- Most rooms in the University residences have connections to the University network
- All CiCS student computing rooms around the campus have connections for portable computers
- The wireless network covers most teaching and social areas of the campus
- In some partnership (not University owned) properties, additional charges may apply for Internet access
From these connections you can access you academic course work and the Internet.
Security and Viruses
You must make sure your computer is up to date in terms of operating system security patches, anti-virus and anti-spyware software before you connect to the campus network. The University will supply you with a free Utilities CD which contains:
- Windows XP Service Pack 2
- McAfee VirusScan Enterprise
- A collection of anti-spyware and adware utilities
It will be your responsibility to keep the software up to date once it is installed. More information can be found at:
Registering Your Computer
- Ensure your computer has up-to-date anti-virus software and security patches. If not, you can protect your computer using the software available on the Utilities CD
- Connect your computer to the network
- Start a web browser; the registration page will be displayed. Read and follow the instructions on how to register your computer.
- Fill in the form, specifying your username and password.
- Once registered, you will be able to connect in allocated areas in CICS student computing rooms, the residences and the wireless network.
- You are responsible for the use of the computer on the University network, so please do not register a computer on behalf of someone else.
