1. The English Language Teaching Centre is one of the central support services of the University.
2. The Centre's staff have experience of teaching:
- international students in a wide range of locations and situations, both in the UK and overseas.
- home students who wish to improve their academic writing.
They are therefore well prepared to give you all the help you may need to improve your English before and during your studies.
3. Facilities at the Centre include computers and virtual language laboratories as well as audiovisual and printed resources in a self-access centre.
4. Students registered at the University can use the Centre's services free of charge.
5. If you would like to follow a course of English before you join a University department:
- the International Summer School Programme (May–September)
- the Academic English Preparatory Course (September–June)
- the Management English Course (year-round).

6. All international students at the University are welcome to make maximum use of the services and facilities offered by the Centre. These include:
- English Language support classes:
A range of courses for all students who wish to focus on certain language skills is offered. These courses take place in the evenings, and on Wednesday afternoons. Registration is online. (Some courses are ‘General’ e.g. Grammar, while others are ‘Faculty specific’, e.g. Academic Speaking for Science & Technology. The actual range of courses offered may change.)

• Individual help sessions for students who feel that they need help with the writing of assignments, reports, dissertations or theses
• five days a week during semesters and vacations
• free to all students
• advance booking is necessary. - Part-time classes within departments:
The English Language Teaching Centre offers English courses in collaboration with many departments of the University aimed at students studying specific.
These classes are held in the departments concerned and are timetabled to fit in with the students' other courses.
7. Credit-bearing modules – the centre offers a range of modules and programmes that give credits for certain groups of international and home students.

8. Teacher Training and Development – the centre delivers various courses for Teaching English as Foreign Language (TEFL) from TEFL Tasters to Cambridge CELTA and modules on the MA in Applied Linguistics with TESOL. To find out more and the entrance requirements see

10. Council Tax
At the time of writing, international students registered at the International Summer School, one semester or other short courses and living in privatelyowned accommodation may not be exempt from Council Tax. Please see Academic Diary and Student Handbook 2010–11 (taught students).
