The University of Sheffield
Welcome to Sheffield

University Library

1. The University Library will be an essential resource for you throughout your studies, providing a place to study as well as access to a huge range of electronic resources.

2. Most departments arrange an introductory Library session for new students, helping you to get the most out of Library resources. There is also an online information skills tutorial to develop your information literacy. It helps you to use the Library catalogue; to search effectively using search engines and databases; to reference correctly and avoid plagiarism in your assignments. This is available in My Online Learning Environment through MUSE, the University Portal.

3. You may need to use more than one site of the Library to find the material you need. Most sites are geared towards specific subjects, although the Information Commons contains the main collection of textbooks to support taught courses for all subjects.
Further information on all Library sites can be found on the web pages.

4. Your U-card, issued at Registration, is also your Library card. You must have it with you whenever you visit the Library: you will need it to get in; to borrow books; to photocopy material and print.

5. For full details of all Library services, including Star, the Library catalogue, see:

www.shef.ac.uk/library

or pick up a GQuickstart Guide at registration or at any Library site.

6. Further information is in the Academic Diary and Student Handbook 2012–13(taught students) or Code of Practice for Research Degree Programmes (research students and supervisors).

7. If you need help using the Library or any of its facilities, staff are on hand to provide assistance and further information is available at
