Your New Room
"I felt so homesick when I first shut the door in my room. But putting out some special things made a great link with home and cheered me up." Pak Wan
When you first enter your new room, we hope you will be happy with it. However, we do know that some students will find it very different from what they are used to.
Also, homesickness can strike anyone.
So it´s important to make your room "your own" as soon as possible.
Here are some tips for doing this:
- Bring some photographs of special people, places, and pets to display.
- Bring a favourite ornament or item to remind you of home.
- Bring or buy a couple of mugs so you can invite new friends/neighbours for a drink.
- Make your bed before you do anything else. Attractive bedding can make the room bright and personal in an instant. (In University accommodation, bed linen packs will be available for purchase from most key collection points.)
- While you are in your room, prop the door open to welcome new neighbours. (Remember, fire doors must be shut at night and on leaving the room. And never leave your door unlocked when you your room.)
- Be brave: say hello to your new neighbours.
- Residential Mentors in University accommodation will help you settle in. They will welcome, you on-site and introduce you to other new students and inform you about activities. There will also be Welcome Talks, to provide you with important information regarding your accommodation and help you meet new people.
