From Airport to Sheffield
1. At All Airports
a. Immigration Control: on arrival present passport and all necessary visa/health documentation (See Arrival in the UK below).
b. Collect baggage.
- Free luggage carts/trolleys are available for bags.
- There are no porters at Manchester Airport. Porters at Heathrow and Gatwick charge a minimum of £7-£8 to help with luggage.
c. Clear customs: go through the red channel if there are goods to declare or the green channel if none. The blue channel is for those whose journeys began in the EU.
2. Public Transport - General Information
a. Coach/long distance buses-times and fares - see www.nationalexpress.com
- You may not be allowed to take more than one large bag on the bus/coach.
- If all seats are booked you will not be allowed to get on the bus.
Train Times and Fares - see www.trainline.co.uk or www.nationalrail.co.uk
Travel before 9.30 am can be much more expensive. Delays are common on Sundays.
All details are correct at the time of printing but you must check near the time of travel.
3. Arriving at Manchester Airport:
a. The University provides transport from the airport to the University during the main arrivals period. (See Meet and Greet below)
b. Public transport to Sheffield:
- By Coach/Bus: There is a dedicated coach stop within the bus station serving Terminals 1 and 2. National Express bus (route number NX350) departs for Sheffield from 8.05 am. The fare is about £7.90 and the journey takes 2-3 hours.
- By Rail: A covered travellator links the rail station direct to all terminals. Trains to Sheffield depart every hour during the day time – the fare is £18.80 (or £12.40 with a young person/student rail card) and the journey time is approximately 1 hour. Trains are safe and comfortable.
Please note that travelling before 9.30am can be more expensive. For information on train times please refer to www.nationalrail.co.uk (See below) - By Taxi Do not use black taxis which wait at the airport:, since they charge approximately £85-£110. We suggest you telephone (from the airport) one of the following Manchester taxi companies who quote fares to Sheffield.

- Confirm the fare at the beginning of your journey when telephoning and again with the driver.
- Manchester taxi drivers will not know locations in Sheffield. Make sure you have the Essential Guide to University Life and the University location map in your hand to help the driver. In case of difficulty locating your destination, ask the taxi driver to drive to Firth Court, Western Bank and to WAIT while you ask porters there for directions.
4. Arriving at Robin Hood Airport, Doncaster
If you will arrive at this airport during the main arrivals period see www.robinhoodairport.com for information about taxis. A taxi from the airport to Sheffield will cost approximately £42-£45.

5. Arriving at Heathrow Airport
- We will not have any representatives at Heathrow Airport to assist you personally. However, you should find the following information useful.
- Public transport to Sheffield: Central Bus Station and the Underground Station are all clearly signposted from the Arrivals Hall.
- By air: Shuttle flight to Manchester departs from Terminal One.
- By coach: National Express Bus direct to Sheffield departs from Heathrow’s Central Bus Station. The fare is £37.50. The buses run between 08.00-23.30 and the journey takes approximately 4-5 hours. Please check with the web site www.nationalexpress.com (see above) for up-to-date information.
- By rail: Go to the Heathrow Airport Underground Station and take the tube to London Kings Cross/Saint Pancras Station. The fare is between £70–£90, (£53 - £60, with a 16-25 rail card) (through to Sheffield). The tube journey takes about 54 minutes, departing every few minutes. At St. Pancras (please see Chung’s advice on page 48), the trains depart for Sheffield every 20-30 minutes The rail journey takes approx 3 hours 20 minutes. (See Rail and Coach Cards below)

6. Arriving At Gatwick Airport
a. We will not have any representatives at Gatwick Airport to assist you personally but you should find the following information useful.
b. Public transport to Sheffield:
Follow the signs for the South Terminal and take the route for required form of transport as follows:
- By Air: Shuttle flight to Manchester: turn into the North Terminal and follow the signs for UK Domestic flights.
- By Coach: National Express bus direct to Sheffield departs from Gatwick’s North and South Terminals. The fare is £40.70. The buses leave from 06.35am and the journey takes approximately 6-7 hours.
- By Rail: Purchase a ticket for Sheffield at Gatwick railway station. This will cost £71.80 or £47.40 with a young person/student rail card.
