Living with the British

Cross-Cultural Communication

Just as you will bring clothes and other personal items, you will also carry invisible "cultural baggage". That baggage is not as obvious as the items in your suitcases, but it will play a major role in your adaptation abroad.

Relationships with Staff

An important aspect of a student“s life is the relationship with members of staff.

Invitations, Dates and Visiting

Invitations to parties, social events, dinner or to visit someone“s home pose problems for some international students.

Time

People tend to be very time conscious in the UK. Lateness (more than 5 minutes for work/study appointments, more than 10 minutes for social) is considered rude.

Summary

This was a very brief look at some of the areas of major difficulty involved in 'Living with the British'. It has not offered many solutions. Solutions or ways of dealing with cross-cultural issues will vary from person to person, and situation to situation.
