Summary
This was a very brief look at some of the areas of major difficulty involved in 'Living with the British'. It has not offered many solutions. Solutions or ways of dealing with cross-cultural issues will vary from person to person, and situation to situation.
However, if you find that you have problems establishing friendly relationships or are confused by what is happening, ask yourself if there could be a cross-cultural issue involved. Watch a British student in the same situation - or an international student who has been here longer - and see if you can analyse what is going on.
And talk to people, talk to students from your home country who have been here longer than you; talk to your tutor or supervisor; talk to Debora Green, Audrey Leadley, Jo Holliday or or the International Student Officer, talk to anyone who will listen!
Most important of all, don't give up on the British; most of them are really nice people - once you get to know them!
