The University of Sheffield
Welcome to Sheffield

Seeing a Doctor

We recommend that you register with the University Health Centre as they give the best all-round specialist support for students.

1. All students registered with the University for 6 months or more should register with a General Practice immediately after arrival.

  1. Students in point 2 on the National Health Service webpage – ‘Who is entitled’ – can register with the University Health Service or another practice, if they choose.
  2. Students registered with the University for more than three but less than six months, can temporarily register with the University Health Service. Other practices may decline to register them.
  3. Students who will be here for less than 6 months should take out medical insurance.
  4. Prompt registration with a doctor is advisable, as is short-term insurance to cover the period between departure from your home country and arrival in Sheffield.

2. First few days

  1. Your body may take time to adjust to the changes in food and water, and your resistance to local micro-organisms may be low on arrival, making you susceptible to minor ailments.
  2. Orientation participants are asked not to attend the University Health Service for registration or interview during Orientation Week unless they are ill. Please see University Health Centre website for details of how and when to register.

3. De-Sensitisation and Allergies

This is not routinely available on the National Health Service. This means that students who have commenced a de-sensitisation programme in their home country should not expect to be able to continue with this on arrival in Sheffield.

4. See the following webpage for where to get medical attention in an emergency,
