About this IDC

Nuclear Engineering

The UK Nuclear Industry requires researchers with nuclear competence and expertise. To meet this need, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) have part-funded a Nuclear Engineering Doctorate (EngD) Centre, which will develop this nuclear competence through industry focused research, complemented by a framework of technical and professional development training. The £7.1M Nuclear EngD programme operates through a partnership between industry and registered universities.

The Engineering Doctorate (EngD) is a 4-year postgraduate award intended for the UK's leading research engineers who want a managerial career in industry. It is a radical alternative to the traditional PhD, being better suited to the needs of industry, and providing a more vocationally oriented doctorate in engineering. One of the key features of the EngD is that the research project is sponsored by and undertaken within a sponsoring company, as opposed to within a university.

The EngD consortium is led by the Dalton Nuclear Institute at the University of Manchester in partnership with Imperial College London and the universities of Sheffield, Bristol, Leeds and Strathclyde.
