Postgraduate Study Opportunities

The Department of Oncology is able to offer students state of the art laboratories, 24/7 access to library and computing facilities, excellent accommodation, world class sporting facilities and easy access to the stunning countryside of the Peak District National Park.
Three main types of graduate activities take place in the Department of Oncology and the Medical School.
Taught CoursesThe Medical School at Sheffield offers a range of taught postgraduate courses, some of which will be of interest to clinicians, who wish to specialise in a given area of work, others will be of interest to postgraduates wishing to explore clinical sciences in greater depth, or start a career in medical research. |
PhD Research DegreesGraduates with, or who expect to receive either a first class, or upper second class degree, or who already have a Master's qualification in a suitable subject are eligible to apply on PhD programmes within the Medical School. These are degrees by research, and offer you the chance to make a unique contribution to your selected field of study. |
MD Research DegreesGraduates in Medicine who are interested in research may be eligible to apply for the research degree of MD. |

All taught programmes within the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry & Health provide opportunities for students to develop the characteristics of the Sheffield Graduate. These opportunities are embedded within the curriculum and identifiable throughout the learning experience.
More specifically, studies from the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry & Health should strive to maximise opportunities to realise their capabilities in the context of excellent healthcare provision. Therefore, in addition to the generic characteristics of the Sheffield Graduate, graduates from the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry & Health will, by the end of their studies:
- have the skills to develop, evaluate and use evidence effectively in clinical practice, care delivery and/or management
- be able to work collaboratively, often as part of an inter-professional team, to enhance and improve patient outcomes and healthcare delivery
- be adaptive and responsive, with the ability to tolerate uncertainty in a constantly changing environment. For this, a broad understanding of concepts of health, illness, public health and global healthare is essential
- show personal responsibility and accountability in care delivery, demonstrating good character and excellent interpersonal sensitivities
- be able to sustain the ongoing development of their professional knowledge and skills
Throughout their time as a student, it will be important to reflect upon how and where in the course they are developing these attributes. The Sheffield Graduate Development Programme, or the Department's tailored personal development programme, combined with discussions with personal and academic tutors, will be the way in which this is put into effect.
The Faculty recognises the value of extra-curricular experiences students may have beyond formal classroom and clinical settings and the benefits these can bring to professional and personal development. Students who wish to be rewarded for these activities can register for the Sheffield Graduate Award, a programme which requires documenting and reflection of such activities.
