Biography

I graduated from the University of Leeds in 1989 and trained in Internal Medicine and Haematology in the UK, New Zealand and Australia. In 2002, I was appointed as Consultant Haematologist & Director of Blood and Marrow Transplantation (BMT) in the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and subsequently worked as Lead Clinician in Haemato-oncology for the Trust (2002-07) and Cancer Network (2007-10). My principal focus is the day-to-day provision and strategic development of tertiary level haematological cancer and BMT services (autologous, allogeneic and cord blood) for Sheffield and the North Trent Cancer Network region (covering approximately 2 million).  In April 2012, we became the first Anthony Nolan collection centre outside London.  In conjunction with my NHS roles, and my Honorary Reader status with the Department of Oncology, University of Sheffield, I endeavour to contribute to research and educational activity in Haemato-oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation. I have published around 100 scientific and clinical articles, including around 70 original observations, and 30 reviews and book chapters, and led on key national and international clinical guidelines. I am secretary to the EBMT Autoimmune Disease Working Party and current Medical Director for the JACIE organisation, which oversees the accreditation of BMT programmes throughout Europe. I am active in multicentre clinical trials and a member of the NCRI Haemato-oncology Clinical Studies Group (CSG) and the executive committee of the UK Myelome Forum (UKMF).
