Biography
I am currently a Reader and Honorary Consultant in Clinical Oncology at the Cancer Research Centre, Academic Unit of Clinical Oncology, based at Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield. I am also a Visiting Professor at Sheffield Hallam University. After qualifying from The University of Cambridge in 1977, I trained at the Churchill Hospital, Oxford and Royal Marsden Hospital, London before taking up my current post at Weston Park Hospital in 1992. I was awarded my Readership post in 2005, and was promoted to Clinical Director of Oncology Services at Weston Park Hospital in 2003, a post I recently resigned in April 2010. Prior to that I was Clinical Director of Radiation Services from 1998 to 2003.
Research Interests
My research interests focus on technical radiotherapy development and clinical trials. My team is currently involved in research in novel radiotherapy techniques such as IMRT (intensity modulated radiotherapy) and new imaging techniques such as PET scanning in head and neck cancer. I am Chief Investigator for the national radiotherapy study in sarcoma called VORTEX. I am also the Principal Investigator for several head and neck studies.
I am a Member of the NTCRN and co-lead for the Rare Tumours Research Group in the Academic Unit of Clinical Oncology, as well as a member of the Head and Neck Network Site Specific Group Executive and member of NTCRN Network Management Group.
Teaching Interests
I am involved in teaching medical students both in clinics as organiser of the Phase II Oncology Symposium. I also teach junior doctors at F1, F2 and Specialist Registrar level.
Professional Activities
I am a Consultant Clinical Oncologist at Weston Park Hospital and am responsible for the management of patients with head and neck cancer, melanoma, sarcoma and lymphoma. I run several weekly clinics at Weston Park Hospital and Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield. I have been involved in the field of sarcoma for many years and created the North Trent sarcoma MDT, and am recognised as an international expert in this field. I was a member of the National Institute Clinical Excellence Guidance Development Group for Sarcoma. I am a former Chairman and now a member of the EORTC Soft Tissue and Bone Sarcoma Local Treatment Group, a former board member of the Connective Tissue Oncology Society (CTOS), and was a founder member of the UKCCCR Soft Tissue Sarcoma Steering Group and UKCCCR Radiotherapy Steering Group.
I am involved in various head and neck and sarcoma trials. I am a Member of the NCRI Head and Neck and Sarcoma Clinical Studies Groups, which is a National advisory board for new research ideas and oversees the development of existing trials, as well as developing new trial proposals.
I am the Chief Investigator for the VORTEX trial (the first study ever designed to examine the accurate definition of radiotherapy target volumes in patients with adult extremity with soft tissue sarcoma), and I am a principal investigator in various other national and international trials.
I sit on local and national committees, including the NICE Consideration Panel for Cancer.
I regular teach medical students and junior medical staff and have given numerous invited lectures, both within the UK and overseas, for example, NCRI Cancer Conference, ESMO International Symposium, UKKRO Conference, BIR, EORTC and CTOS.
I have authored many publications over the last 15 years, and was the founding Editor for the journal `Sarcoma´, an international journal dedicated to multidisciplinary research into connective tissue oncology. I am also a invited reviewer for other journals.
Current Projects
Current aims are to enhance Sheffield´s engagement in radiotherapy related research in all cancer types by developing trial and referral pathways.
