Clinical OncologyThe Academic Unit is located in purpose built facilities, generously funded by the Cancer Appeal, that provide facilities for the assessment and treatment of patients, office space for staff with fully networked computer systems, a laboratory, and specialist activities such as bone densitometry. The environment is ideal for both patients and staff and has allowed rapid expansion of the staffing and the range of research that can be performed. |
Institute for Cancer StudiesOur aim is to provide an interactive environment for basic and translational cancer research that genuinely promotes the understanding of the causes and cures of cancer. Current research projects in the Institute focus on genetic instability in cancer. Basic research programmes probe mechanisms of DNA repair, recombination, DNA synthesis, cell cycle checkpoints, and cell death. Translational research aims to determine the effect of inherited alterations of damage response pathways on cancer risk and outcome and the consequences of acquired alterations on tumour development and therapy. |
Human NutritionThe Human Nutrition Unit has an international reputation for academic research in human nutrition. The Unit offers well established postgraduate courses in human nutrition which attract both home and international students.The courses are widely recognised for their academic excellence and quality of teaching. They offer students a thorough grounding in core disciplines of nutritional science informed by the research and scholarship of academic staff. |

Ophthalmics and OrthopticsSituated in a busy teaching hospital, the Academic Unit of Ophthalmology and Orthoptics provides facilities for both clinical and laboratory based research. Its close links with other Units in the Medical School provide added expertise for investigative work in medically important areas. |
Supportive CareThe Academic Unit of Supportive Care is responsible for a wide range of academic and clinical activities. Its multi-disciplinary research programme includes clinical trials, needs assessment and service evaluations, narrative methods, methodological development, and information services. The AUSC is involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, and the training of specialist registrars in palliative care. AUSC also offers supervision for higher degrees. |
Surgical OncologyThe specific clinical interests of the unit are the management of patients with cancer of the breast and soft tissue sarcoma. The recognition of the role of surgery in the management of cancer by the establishment of this chair compliments other established academic units such as Medical Oncology and the Cancer Institute within the University of Sheffield. |

UrologyThe Academic Urology Unit was established in Sheffield in 1999. The Unit has expertise in the management of urological malignancies, specifically early prostate cancer, and in the biology of skeletal metastases. A multidisciplinary team of scientists within the Medical School are engaged in prostate cancer research. The Academic Urology Unit has laboratory facilities and expertise, within the Department of Oncology. |
