Students' and Parents' Experiences
Experiences of a French Student
I remember when I first decided to spend a year abroad, in Sheffield, Two different feelings mingled in my head: happiness at living for a year as an English student, and fear of being left alone. In fact, all my fears soon disappeared; I have never experienced so much help, never been alone. Everybody has always tried to help me and do the best for me.
I found my residence quickly and easily which reassured me. I chose catered accommodation, and although I was worried about the "English food" I am really happy with the wide range that is offered, especially as I am a vegetarian!
Another great thing was the "Meet and Greet scheme". When I arrived at Manchester airport, I was welcomed by students from the University of Sheffield who made me feel much more at ease. Then they took me back to my residence by bus.
The first week, Intro Week, will always stay in my memory: parties every evening, lots of events all day long, so many people trying to meet you and lots of friendships starting. I realised that I was not dreaming and that I was really living at last the English student way of life. But this aspect of student life is not the only thing: there are also classes! And there again I was really scared at first… but why? I managed my modules easily, everything is shown and explained! Seminars are different than in France and are really active. Teachers want students to be energetic in class and thanks to them, I improved my participation. Exams are also different but we are taught so that we feel comfortable with our homework and get everything done on time!
As a student I was also really concerned about money; England is said to be an expensive country but the University is here to provide help with its special centre created to help us find a job which offers various posts every week.
I will finish with the best aspect of life in England, and life in the University of Sheffield, which is going out!!! Here again so many things are organised to make you enjoy life without risking failing your degree (lots of parties in the Union, International parties, events in town). One really great thing for women is the bus that for only £1 drives you back home!! Don´t worry - Sheffield is a safe place!!
The University of Sheffield is a great place that I encourage everyone to come to. I hope next year it will be you who will tell your experiences!!
