Student illness

We ask students to put an emergency contact on their University record. We would normally use this only in the unlikely case of medical personnel advising that this is required. Normally, medical staff would be the ones to make contact if they consider it necessary.

Neither University policy nor UK law allows us to disclose any information about a student without their express consent to any third party – even a parent – except in an emergency.

We pass contact details to a hospital in an emergency and might seek advice from them regarding the need to contact next of kin.

Hospitals have similar guidelines and do not notify the University of hospitalised students unless the students ask them to. It is up to students themselves to inform the University that they are in hospital; many choose not to. If we do have contact with a student in hospital, we suggest that they let people at home know, but cannot do this for them without their permission.

If you have serious concerns

You could suggest that s/he contacts one of the many services listed in the academic diary/student handbook which is issued at registration or on our web pages.

The academic diary/student handbook is a useful diary which also contains important information about University Regulations.

Students can also refer to the Students' Charter which is a partnership document between the University and its students and outlines the complaints procedure.

If you are really concerned, then please call us: (+44) 114 222 4321.

Whilst we cannot discuss an individual's situation/circumstances (without their permission), we can contact students and offer support as appropriate, but cannot guarantee that they will choose to take advantage of this.

Confidentiality

Students have a legal right to access any information on file we hold about them. This means that we cannot guarantee that anything you say to us will be 100% confidential.

Written notes may be made following a telephone call. We could discuss this with you should the occasion arise.
