Our scores for REF 2014

Philosophy top three in the UK for research output

We are very pleased to announce that the 2014 'Research Excellence Framework' has ranked our publications 2nd in the country, both by their average quality (3.19 out of 4), and by the proportion of those awarded the top two scores (4*--'world leading'--and 3*--'internationally excellent'). This follows our excellent results in the previous research assessment exercise, RAE 2008, which put us joint third. This REF result is especially gratifying since we took the unusual decision to include research from all of our eligible academic staff, whereas some departments submitted only the work of their best researchers.

The REF also assessed departments on the basis of 'impact' outside academia and 'environment' (which includes such things as grant income).  When these are included we once again scored second by proportion of 4* and 3* ratings.
