Manual lifting and carrying

All manual handling tasks offering some risk to those involved should be assessed by a suitably competent person before the task commences. Any reasonably practicable measures which can be taken to reduce the risk should be implemented. This should include the use of lifting equipment.

In normal lifting, the back should be kept straight but relaxed and the lift achieved by the leg muscles. Snatching, twisting and over-reaching must be avoided.

No attempt should be made to lift a load which is unduly heavy or bulky. In such circumstances, help should always be sought and a risk assessment undertaken.

Those regularly employed on heavy lifting work should wear protective clothing, including safety shoes and where necessary appropriate gloves.

In team lifting, it should be made clear from the outset who is acting as leader and the lift should be planned carefully before any action is taken.

Anyone engaged in manual handling as part of their job should undergo training at an appropriate level. Safety Services run regular courses, see their web site for details.
