Degree courses
By choosing to study with us you will join a vibrant, friendly department, consistently highly rated for both its teaching and research. Your degree will provide a deep understanding of both the fundamental aspects and topics at the forefront of your chosen subject. Most degrees can be taken as a three year BSc or a four year MPhys. The latter is particularly relevant if you plan to work in a related industry or continue to a PhD, but also if you wish to extend your knowledge of our fascinating subjects further. All our main degrees are accredited by the UK Institute of Physics.

Why study our degrees?
Our degrees are designed for those with a strong general interest in modern physics and related subjects who want to study at the forefront of the discipline. It provides a thorough background to the subject as well as opportunities to work with world-class scientists doing research in a range of subjects including particle physics, nanotechnology, astrophysics, polymer and biophysics.
Our students have an excellent employability record in a wide range of graduate careers. Many enter science-related industries such as working for renewable energy, nanotechnology, space exploration industries and telecommunications companies. Others go into non-science graduate careers, using the graduate level skills they gained from their degree. Many choose further study, doing masters and PhDs in the UK and abroad, and teaching.
Flexibility and choice
You can study physics at Sheffield either by itself (a single honours degree), as a combined "physics with..." degree where physics takes about two thirds of your time and a related subject one third, or as part of a dual honours degree where you spend roughly equal time on physics and a second subject. The BSc and MPhys degrees are identical for the first two years allowing you to make a decision of which degree to follow up until the end of your second year.
