During Placement
We ask that you commit to the following as a provider of a placement for a University of Sheffield student. Downlaod the documents on the right hand menu for more information.
- Best practice guidelines - please familiarise yourself with the best practice guidelines, outlining the responsibilities of the University, the student and the placement provider.
- Induction - during the first week on placement students should receive an induction. An induction checklist is provided by the university outlining the areas that should be covered during induction.
- Health and Safety briefing - Students will need to receive a Health and Safety briefing from either their placement supervisor or the nominated Health and Safety representative within your organisation. This should be done preferably on the first day of their placement.
Placement supervisor & mentor
It is advisable to allocate a placement supervisor and mentor for the duration of the placement.
Visit by academic tutor / representative from the University of Sheffield.
The University will be in contact with the student for the duration of the placement and where possible we will visit the student mid-way through the placement. Visits have a number of purposes and are valued by the student, visiting tutor and the host company.
The main objectives of the placement visit are to:
- monitor the progress of the placement.
- evaluate the student’s performance.
- identify development opportunities for the remainder of the placement.
The visiting tutor will spend time with both the student and the supervisor. In the absence of a visit being made, a virtual visit will be carried out. During a virtual visit communication should take place via web cam / video conferencing or telephone call. You will receive guidance on preparing for a visit ahead of the scheduled visit / virtual visit.
Student access to internet
Students will need to use the internet in order to access online learning materials provided by The University of Sheffield. If you are unable to offer students access to this facility please advise the Student Placement Officer so alternative arrangements can be made.
Assessment
During the placement the student will be required to complete:
- a placement journal.
- a report focusing on either
- a critical evaluation of management or
- a technical issues that they have identified during their placement or
- a critical evaluation of a project they have worked on during their placement
Your assistance and support is appreciated with the assessment and the student will discuss the report with you in more detail
