Taught Masters: Requirements and Application

Photo: SeminarSelection of candidates is based on academic ability. This is usually decided on the basis of academic performance to date and/or predicted attainment in courses currently being undertaken.

Normally, we only accept candidates with at least an Upper Second Class Honours degree (or equivalent) plus supportive references from previous tutors. However, in certain circumstances we may consider candidates who do not meet these minimum requirements.

Students whose first language is not English must have passed either the TOEFL internet-based test with a minimum of 88 (minimum of 22 in reading and writing, 21 in listening and 23 in speaking), IELTS with a minimum of 6.5 (with a minimum of 6.5 in essay writing), or Pearson Test of English - Academic, 61 overall (with 61 in writing).

Application Procedure

An online application form is located on the University prospective students web pages.

Postgraduate Taught online applications

Whilst many enquirers may wish to discuss their application directly with the Department, in all cases a formal application form must be made by completing the University's online application form.

Once completed, the form, together with any additional material you wish to be considered, should be returned to Graduate Admissions who will arrange to have your application considered as quickly as possible.

Upon receipt of your application form, Graduate Admissions will issue an acknowledgment letter containing your unique Graduate Application number. In all subsequent correspondence, this number, along with your name and the course and department to which you have applied, should be quoted.

In order to assist the University in making a prompt decision, international students should include transcripts of their previous qualifications (including English Language ability) and details of the grading/marking schemes used in the assessment of those qualifications.

Applicants who are offered a place will be issued with information about accommodation upon receipt of the acceptance of their offer. Nearer the expected start date, applicants who have accepted an unconditional offer will be issued with a comprehensive information pack.

There is no deadline for applying to become a graduate student, although it may be advisable to apply well in advance of your anticipated date of entry, particularly if you are an international student, as there are a number of arrangements to be made before coming to Sheffield.

Please note: We are continually reviewing our courses and reserve the right to discontinue or amend course programmes.
