Research Degrees: Entry Qualifications and Application Procedures
The primary criterion used in the selection of students is your academic ability to meet the intellectual standards, usually decided on the basis of academic performance to date. This normally means that you will need at least an Upper Second Class Honours degree (or its equivalent) if you wish to undertake the "1+3" scheme.
Find out more about the "1+3" scheme
For direct entry into MPhil or PhD (the "3"), you will normally also need to have an approved "Research Training" rated MA, or an MA with a substantial research methods training component.
Students whose first language is not English must have passed either the TOEFL (a minimum of 600, with a minimum of 4.5 in written English), or a minimum of 6.5 in IELTS (with a minimum of 6.5 in essay writing).
We hope that you will discuss your proposed research with the Department.
If you choose to apply, a formal application must be made by completing the University's application form and enclosing an outline of your proposed research.
Once completed, the form, together with any additional material you wish to be considered, should be returned to Graduate Research Admissions who will arrange to have your application considered as quickly as possible.
If you are an international student, please include transcripts of your previous qualifications (including English Language ability) and details of the grading/marking schemes used in the assessment of those qualifications.
