Local support
We have representatives permanently based in cities around the world. They're trained counsellors who know all about our courses, entry requirements and application procedures. -
Speak to a student
We can put you in contact with a current Sheffield student from your country. You can ask them what it's like here.
We don't believe in barriers
If you have the potential to study here but you're not quite ready, we can help you.
If you need to improve your English level to meet our entry requirements, the English Language Teaching Centre (ELTC) has a range of courses to choose from.
If you need help to achieve our academic standards, the Sheffield International College (SIC) has a choice of pre-masters programmes.
English Language Teaching Centre (ELTC)
The ELTC offers a range of English language courses to prepare you for university study before you start your degree. It also provides a variety of free English language development courses and services that you can access while you’re studying. The centre is accredited by the British Council.
University English
This full-time course helps you reach the level of English you need to take a masters at the University. The course introduces you to the British way of life, the education system and its study methods. It will also help you prepare for tests such as IELTS.
There are 21 hours of tuition per week plus social activities and visits to local places of interest. The course runs throughout the academic year from September to June.
Management English
This course is useful if you want to study the MBA or the MSc in Management. It includes Business English, English for Management, and preparation for IELTS. You can start in September, January or April.
International Summer School (Pre-sessional Course)
This course is aimed at students who already have a conditional or unconditional offer of a place on a masters. You’ll develop your academic reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. You’ll also learn study skills such as note-taking, presentations and research.
At the end of the course you can take the University of Sheffield English Proficiency Test (USEPT), which is accepted as equivalent to the IELTS test by the University. Depending on your needs you can start in April, June, July or August.
English language support
Once you start your masters, you can get help with your English while you study. This includes individual advice on writing and part-time English classes in academic writing, academic listening, grammar and pronunciation.
Your department may organise special English classes related to your subject, taught by ELTC staff. These courses are free.
Partners' English
This programme offers English language lessons twice a week for the partners of international students on degree programmes at the University.
A free crèche for children aged between 1 year and 5 years is also provided and run by qualified staff (subject to availability). This programme is free.
Sheffield International College (SIC)
The college is based on campus. It runs pre-masters courses in business, law, social sciences, science and engineering. The courses combine academic subjects with English language training. They're designed to help you achieve the standard you need to go on to a masters course.
Because your English language studies are integrated with your academic work, you’ll get used to thinking, reading and writing in English at the right academic level. Classes are small and you get continuous feedback to help you succeed.
While you're studying at SIC, you'll be part of campus life. You'll enjoy the same benefits and social life as other Sheffield postgraduate students. So by the time you’re ready to start your masters degree, you’ll already be at home here.
