Student support
The University and the Union of Students are well-equipped to assist with welfare or other problems which may arise.
Your supervisor or course tutor is always ready to discuss any problems concerned with your studies but can also help with personal problems, and if necessary can put you in touch with the relevant section of our student support services for more specialist advice.

SSiD is your first port of call for information about services and sources of help. You can access SSiD online, or come down and speak to someone in person. SSiD's located in the Students' Union building at the centre of the campus.

Student Services
The Student Services Department is responsible for:
- The central administrative work concerned with student registration, fees and examinations
- Overseeing most aspects of student welfare
- Providing support for international students, mature students, and students who have disabilities
- Looking after the welfare of nursing and midwifery students

RIS can help on issues concerning:
- The administration of internal and external scholarships and bursaries
- Research degree submissions and examinations
- The Doctoral Development Programme
- The award of degrees

Disabilities
The University of Sheffield welcomes disabled and dyslexic students and is committed to taking all practical steps to ensure that students can participate in their studies without disadvantage, and can make full use of the University's academic and support services.
In order to set up support and make any reasonable adjustments required, students need to inform the University of any additional support requirements at the earliest opportunity.
Applicants with mobility difficulties should be aware that access to some departments and services is restricted, but, wherever possible, we will make reasonable adaptations.

Religion and belief
The multi-faith Chaplaincy Service provides information and advice for students of all faith communities. The chaplains and religious advisers are available to everyone within the University to provide care and support, as well as opportunities for religious observance.
Christian Chaplains are provided by the Church of England, the Methodist Church, the Roman Catholic Church, the United Reform Church, the Greek Orthodox Church, and the Society of Friends.
There is a Muslim Chaplain, as well as three Muslim Advisers (male and female). There is a mosque close to the central campus and prayer rooms are also available in the Students' Union, School of Medicine, Information Commons and the Mappin Building for Muslim students.
A Jewish chaplain and local Orthodox and Reform Jewish representatives are available to Jewish students.
We also have religious advisers for Buddhists, Hindus, Sikhs and a number of other faith groups.
Childcare
The Students' Union provides a range of services for students with children. These include:
- A 64-place nursery, offering day care for children aged 6 months–5 years, with fees subsidised according to family income
- Playschemes during school holidays, for children aged 4–12 years
- Childcare allowances for students involved in Union activities

Places are generally allocated on a 'first come, first served' basis, but consideration is given to family circumstances and students' timetable commitments.
Counselling Services
The University Counselling Service is available to help you in times of stress.
Difficulties may include issues such as worries about academic work, personal relationships, exam panic, anxiety and depression. Counselling can also involve exploring ways of building on your strengths.
The counselling team runs workshops and seminars, as well as seeing people individually, and is very happy to be approached by groups of students requiring help with specific issues or difficulties. The service is confidential.
