Security
This is just a remainder from PC Bob Kenney to ensure you keep your property secure at all time. Some useful advice includes:
- Make sure you keep all doors and windows locked - even when you are in
- Get a couple of plug-in timers for lights and TVs/radios so they can come on when you are out - it looks like someone is at home
- Don't leave valuables on display
- Make sure someone has responsibility for locking up - don't assume someone else will
- If you have a car - take the car keys upstairs at night
Deposit Scam
Students looking for accommodation should be aware about a scam in which they are asked to pay a holding deposit before they see a property.
A growing number of students have been taken in by adverts posted on websites where fake landlords demand a 'holding deposit'. The students then pay up, but the letting never materialises and they lose their money.
The advise is simple: Do not pay a holding deposit, rent or any money without first visiting a property.
As of 06 April 2007, all tenancy deposits must be protected in one of the recognised tenancy deposit protection schemes. Find out from your landlord which scheme your deposit is with.
Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas. Don't mistake the symptons for a hangover.
All students need to be aware of how to avoid gas safety risks in their student accommodation.
All landlords must arrange for a Gas Safe registered engineer to carry out a gas safety check on all gas appliances every 12 months and the landlord should then provide you with a copy of the Landlord's Gas Safety Record.
If you suffer from:
- Headaches
- Nausea
- Breathlessness
- Collapse
- Dizziness
- Loss of consciousness
These may not be the signs of a good night out?
