Research Interests
My research interests lie in the area of adjustment to appearance affecting conditions and in the study of the reciprocal effects of cognitive processes and emotional disturbance. Clinically I work with adults with complex mental health problems as part of a multidisciplinary community mental health team in Sheffield. As a clinical psychologist I place great value on the important link between theoretical experimental psychology and clinical practice.
Adjustment to appearance affecting conditions
I have a particular interest in understanding what factors influence adjustment or distress associated with appearance affecting conditions and especially skin conditions. I am also interested in the effectiveness of psychological interventions in targeting the distress and clinical severity associated with the conditions.
Attention and emotions
Much of my research has centred on the role of attentional biases in the origin and maintenance of anxiety and social anxiety. My research has also focused on the role that attentional biases play in the distress experienced by people with appearance affecting skin conditions. Research in this area is important in informing models and clinical interventions. I am interested in expanding this work to other clinical and health populations. I am also interested to explore how different attachment styles affect attentional processing of emotional stimuli (e.g. threat) in different clinical and non clinical populations.
Clinical Interventions
I have a strong interest in clinical interventions and have been involved in projects that have examined the self-regulation of attention and appraisal of performance in people with social anxiety. I am interested to further explore the application of high level cognitive interventions to target low level cognitive processes that underpin different emotional disorders. I am also interested to further study the effectiveness and use of psychological interventions for health conditions (especially those affecting appearance).
