Professor Sir Keith Burnett |
Professor Burnett, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sheffield is an eminent atomic physicist who has played an important role in developing science policy in the UK. He is a member of the Council of Science and Technology reporting to the Prime Minister and has offered independent advice on issues such as postgraduate education.
Professor Keith Burnett has been awarded a knighthood in the New Year's honours list for services to science and higher education. As Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sheffield since 2007, Professor Burnett leads a University which combines world-class scholarship with the highest quality teaching. He has also focused attention on the impact of a civic university on wider society, and particularly its city and region. In 2011 the University of Sheffield was named the Times Higher Education University of the Year.

Professor Sir Gordon Duff |
Sir Gordon, Professor of Molecular Medicine and previously Medical Research Dean at the University, received his knighthood for "services to Public Health". In 2006, he led an inquiry into safety after the Northwick Park drugs trial that left six men seriously ill. His subsequent report contained 22 recommendations to increase safety in clinical studies. |

Sir David, Emeritus Professor of Plant Science in the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences, received his knighthood for "services to Biological Science". He has spent the last 40 years working at the University and was formerly the Biological Secretary and Vice-President of the Royal Society. |

Professor Sir Ian Kershaw |
Sir Ian, Emeritus Professor of Modern History, received his knighthood in 2002 for "services to History". He is also a fellow of the British Academy, of the Royal Historical Society, of the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin, and of the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung in Bonn. |

Professor Sir Anthony Bottoms |
Honorary Professor in the School of Law, Sir Anthony was knighted for "services to the Criminal Justice System". He was also elected Fellow of the British Academy in 1997, awarded the Sellin-Glueck Prize of the American Society of Criminology in 1996. |

Founder of the Sheffield Institute for Studies on Ageing, Ian was awarded a CBE for "services to Healthcare". Professor Philp has been an advisor to the World Health Organisation, as well as the National Director for Older People in the Department of Health. |

Emeritus Professor of Paediatrics, Stuart was awarded a CBE for his contribution to medicine. Professor Tanner is a leader in childhood liver disease and his research has gained him international respect. He has also been recognised for his services to best practice within the NHS. |

Emeritus Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Geof was awarded his OBE for services to technology. He is currently Director of the Dainton-Boucher Institute (the DBI), which is acting as a hub for research developments in Singapore, and is an Adviser to the Malaysian Government on Aerostructures Manufacturing. |

Professor in the Department of Biblical Studies, Loveday is an ordained priest in the Anglican Church and in 2003 was appointed Canon-Theologian at Chester Cathedral. |
Fellows of the Royal Society (FRS)
The Royal Society is the world's oldest scientific academy in continuous existence, and has been at the forefront of enquiry and discovery since its foundation in 1660. The backbone of the Society is its Fellowship of the most eminent scientists of the day, elected for life by peer review and entitled to use FRS after their name. Each year the Royal Society awards 44 Fellowships to the best scientists in recognition of their scientific achievements. Throughout its history, the Society has promoted excellence in science through its Fellowship and Foreign Membership, which has included Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Ernest Rutherford, Albert Einstein, Dorothy Hodgkin, Francis Crick, James Watson and Stephen Hawking.
